Cake giving

You've received the invitation and you're wondering what to do about the wedding gift.  Most likely, the couple has a registered gift wish list but while the bride and groom always appreciate a complete flatware set or that elusive gravy boat, you'd prefer to give a more personal gift - try cake giving!

Offering to pay for all or a portion of the wedding cake for a friend or family member is a lovely way to make a memorable contribution to the celebration and to take some of the pressure off a derailing wedding budget.  To ensure your gift of cake is thoroughly enjoyed, take note of a couple of things:

  • Don't keep your budget a secret: You likely have a budget (or at least a range) in mind for the wedding gift.  If you choose to make your wedding gift the cake or a financial contribution to the cake, it is a good idea to share that information with the bride and groom. This will prevent misunderstandings and will allow the couple to appropriately plan for their big day.

  • Sorry, it's not your cake: The bride and groom may ask you for suggestions regarding the cake or invite you to join them at a cake tasting as a way of expressing their gratitude for your gift.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to share in their excitement and the wedding plans - enjoy it!  Just remember that the ultimate decision, be it flavour, style or baker, does not rest with you.

  • Keepsake:  You will know that your wedding gift was truly appreciated if good memories, photographs and crumbs are all that is left of it by the end of the wedding reception!  If appropriate, consider a personalized cake topper or vintage cake stand as part of your cake gift - the married couple will appreciate the sweet, though not edible, keepsake.
